The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. The festival has a history of over 2,000 years and is celebrated to commemorate the ancient poet and statesman Qu Yuan.
The Dragon Boat Festival is famous for its dragon boat races, where teams of rowers paddle in long, narrow boats decorated like dragons. These races symbolize the attempts to rescue Qu Yuan when he drowned himself in the Miluo River. People also prepare and eat sticky rice dumplings called zongzi, which are typically wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with various ingredients such as meat, beans, or nuts. Zongzi is considered a traditional food for the festival and is believed to ward off evil spirits.
Other customs and activities during the Dragon Boat Festival include hanging up pouches of herbs like wormwood and calamus on their doors or windows to ward off evil spirits and protect against diseases. Children wearing sachets which filled with herbs and spices. The sachets are believed to have medicinal and protective properties and are worn around the neck or tied to clothing. They are thought to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.
The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time for celebrating and enjoying cultural traditions but also an opportunity for family reunions and paying respects to ancestors. It is recognized as a public holiday in China and is also celebrated by Chinese communities around the world.
